Online Business Acronyms Explained

Online Business Acronyms Explained

Have you been searching for online support and been overwhelmed by the acronyms you’ve seen on LinkedIn, Instagram or websites? While these abbreviations are efficient for those in the know, they can sometimes feel like a secret code if you’re not familiar with them. And as someone already busy and in search of assistance, deciphering jargon shouldn’t be on your to-do list!

Here are a few key acronyms explained:

  • VA (Virtual Assistant): Virtual Assistants provide professional administrative, technical, or creative support to clients from their home office. Think of them a PA just not in the same office as you. We become an integral part of your team, handling tasks that free up your time to focus on the core aspects of your business rather than back-end tasks. Some VAs will focus purely on a specific skill such as Diary & Email management (classical PA support), some will be “Tech” focused (websites, “funnels”, lead magnets), some can be purely focused on Social Media (creating content, posting content). Some can be a mix of all three.
  • OBM (Online Business Manager): Often working at a more strategic level than a VA, an OBM is responsible for the day-to-day operations of an online business. They typically manage projects, teams, and implement strategies to achieve business goals. Generally, if working with an OBM you’ll already have multiple team members and the OBM will be the key coordinator liaising and meeting with your team, whilst you liaise directly with the OBM.
  • PM (Project Manager): A Project Manager is focused on planning, executing, and closing specific projects. They ensure tasks are completed on time, within budget, and to the required specifications. They are the maestro of making things happen for a defined initiative. PMs usually stay for a specific task only or move from one project to another within the business.
  • DOO (Director of Operations): Similar to an OBM but often in much larger organisations, the DOO oversees the ongoing operational functions of the business. They focus on efficiency, process optimisation, and ensuring smooth day-to-day activities align with the overall business strategy. This is a big role with a big team and operation underneath it.
